5 Elements

The element, characteristic and of growth, direction and strength. Witnessed in nature, it occurs especially in spring. Inside us, this energy controls the function of liver and the gallbladder, and provides the ability to plan and to make decisions, to have a vision a plan a goal, and to have the drive and determination to achieve it. Hindrance of this energy can lead to frustration and eventually to anger. Resolved, it leads to hope and confidence in the future.

The element is characteristic of heat, from blossoming to propagation. It is seen in nature at its peak in summer. Inside us, it manifests in the function of our heart and small intestines as unfolding, maturing individuation, reaching out to others to be in relationship, to connect in the personal, even intimate way. Feeling safe to become vulnerable, to be enthusiastic and passionate. If the fire is burned out it can lead to insecurity and even depression. Five Element acupuncture can rekindle this fire.

The element shows itself especially in late summer, at harvest time. It manifests as nature’s time of plenty, providing an abundance of nourishment on every level. It feeds the mother and the child inside of us through our stomach and spleen, providing us with our daily bread, as well as bringing in our life’s harvest. If we are unable to take it in, we feel starved, needy and abandoned. However, though proper treatment, we can become reconnected with our inner mother.

The element  provides quality and value in nature through purification, as witnessed In autumn when the trees shed their leaves, while saving the essence the sap in the roots. Much the same in us, the metal assures our ability to eliminate waste and thus purify us, so we become aware of our quality and self worth. If we become polluted, we experience low self esteem. Enriching the functions of lungs and colon, we can reclaim our “inner gold”.

Water, the element that fills our reservoirs, and has the power to sustain life. Inside us it provides fluids for every cell, sustaining our whole being with reserves. It fills the reservoirs of our minds with knowledge, and endows it with power.  Our mind with knowledge and power, and our spirit with wisdom. If water is out of balance, it causes fear of survival until our water organs, kidneys and bladder, are re-empowered and feel safe.
