Mark Tobey's "Nightflight" An Original Lithograph, 1975 - Ed. 5/150 Mark Tobey (1890 - 1976) was a pioneer of American Abstraction and one of the most important artists to have been a part of the group from the Pacific Northwest known as the Northwest School. He and his work are still deeply revered in this region and internationally. His work is permanently housed in major art museums as well as public and private collections throughout the world. Tobey is an artist whose communication is effected in the most purely visual language, resisting translations into any other. He described his distinctive calligraphic style as kind of a moving line. It is characterized by the frequent use of leaf-like forms and structures, crystalline networks of fine lines and above all, by undulating, interconnecting and overlapping movement.
